The Family of Giovannantonio Macchiarola and Giuseppina Canfora
Giuseppina Canfora of Volturara Appula in Puglia married Giovannantonio Macchiarola of Gambatesa. They had five children, of whom Gennaro (Gennarino) was the second oldest.
Gennaro (Gennarino) Macchiarola
Gennarino Macchiarola was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina (His family returned to Gambatesa, however, when he was still a small child). Below is a passport photograph of Gennaro from 1950, just prior to his emigration to the United States on May 5th. Gennaro was a fitter by trade. He married Maria Dora Valente, the daughter of Giovanni Valente and Nunziata DiRenzo, on 20 August 1956. He died 19 August 1985 in Voorhees, New Jersey, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.

The photograph below is of Giovannantonio Macchiarola, his wife and their children (except Beniamino), in Gambatesa, before the death their son Benito. If you compare this photograph with the 1960 photograph of Michele Valente's daughter Carmina fetching water from the village fountain, you will see the vast difference in wealth between the two families. And Nunziata DiRenzo's family was even poorer than the Valente family, because it owned no farmland.

- Back Row (from viewer's left to right): Giovannantonio Macchiarola, his wife Giuseppina Canfora, and their sons Gennarino and Nicolino
- Front Row: their children Benito and Carmelina
Absent from the photograph is Beniamino Macchiarola. Benito Macchiarola, who was named after Mussolini, died in Gambatesa when he stepped on a land mine, 11 April 1943.
