Letter from Salvatore D'alessandro to his godmother in America - Pages 1-2

A Transcription and Translation. cf. Notes about the written Italian and the dialect spoken in Gambatesa.

The letter is written on a single sheet of paper 18 cm [6 1/2 in.] x 26 cm [10 1/4 in.], folded in half to make four panes. The printed lines on the single sheet run across the width. The envelope which contained the letter measures 9.7 cm x 14.2 cm [3 3/4 in. x 5 1/2 in.]. There is a photograph of Salvatore with his wife and two children from 1916, as well as a photograph of Felice in Italian military uniform.

Note.--Casalbordino is a comune in the Province of Chieti, Region of Abruzzo, about 72 km. [44.7 miles] north of Gambatesa. (It lies inland from the city of Vasto, which is 27 km. [16.7 miles] northwest of Termoli.)

Mia carissima patina Vittoria doppo di molto anni viscrive questi poche riche dilettera perdarvi notizie di me con tutti di famiglia

e anche del mio figlio Felice che giorno 10 del corente meso e ritornato in Italia e stiamo tutti bene insaluto e lostesso noi speriamo assentir anche di voi con tutti gli tuoi figli

My dearest godmother Vittoria, After many years I write to you these few humble lines in order to give you news of me and all the family.

and also of my son Felice who on the 10th of the current month returned to Italy. And we are all in good health and we hope to hear the same also of you and your children

carissima patina noi siamo rimasto molto contento che voi siata andato attrovare al mio figlio Felice quando ero in'[A]Merica e molto vi ringraziamo tutti di famiglia carissima mia patina

e poi carissima patina per altra parta noi siamo rimasto molto dispiacituo che il mio patino Giuseppe e passato alta vita ma non abbiamo che far che __di a cosi a vouto

and grandchildren [nieces and nephews].

Dearest godmother, we are made happy that you went to see my son Felice when he was in America and the whole family thanks you very much, my dearest godmother.

And further, dearest godmother, on the other hand we are made sad that my godfather Giuseppe has passed to the other life, but there is nothing we can do because God has willed it so.
