Map of the Department of Bas-Rhin, Alsace

Strasbourg is the Prefecture ("administrative center") of the Department of Bas-Rhin, while to its south Colmar is the Prefecture of the Department of Haut-Rhin. These Departments make up the two parts of Alsace. Mülhausen, the birthplace of Marguerithe Kiehl (later Margarett Becker, 1830-1916), is in the Arrondissement of Saverne. Saverne lies to the northwest of Strasbourg (directly above the later "a" in "Strasbourg" on the map below), and so that will be the area where the village of Mülhausen is found.

Directly west of Saverne, across the Rhine River, is the city of Baden-Baden, which may have been the birthplace of Margarett's husband Wilhelm Becker (1822-1901). To the northwest of Bas-Rhin lies the French region of Lorraine and to the west Moselle, while to the northeast lies Germany's Palatinate (now Rhineland Palatinate) and to the east Baden (now Baden Württemberg).
