Birth record of Marguerithe Kiehl, Mülhausen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, 4 August 1830
Margarett Kiehl (1830-1916) was born in the commune ("town") of Mülhausen, Alsace, in the Département du Bas-Rhin ("Department of the Lower Rhine"), France, on 4 August 1930. Her parents were Jean Kiehl and Marie (née Peter) Kiehl (married 11 December 1814), both 35 years old at the time of her birth, although Margarett's father signed his name to the record "Johann (or Johannes) Kiehl". His occupation is stated to be cultivateur ("farmer").
Margarett later emigrated to America and married Wilhelm Becker (1822-1901) of Baden. She died on 20 February 1916 and is buried in Mt Peace Cemetery, Philadelphia, with her husband.

Remarks
Death Certificate That Margarett was the wife of Wilhelm Becker is confirmed by her death certificate, although her date of birth is misstated there as 4 August 1836, but her parents are named as John and Mary (née Peters) Kiehl, and Margarett is stated to be the widow of Wilhelm Becker. There is as well another way to partly verify that Margarett was from Alsace.
Mülhausen: lost by France as an outcome of the Franco-Prussian War, Alsace was ruled by Germany from 1871-1918, when it was returned to France following World War One. The city of Strasbourg is the Prefecture ("administrative center") of the Department of Bas-Rhin, which is the northeastern part of Alsace (The "lower Rhine" is its northern end, where the river flows into the North Sea). Thus Margarett Becker (1830-1916) was born a citizen of France and died a citizen of Germany, unless she became a U.S. citizen. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) was born a citizen of Germany and died a citizen of France. The history of Alsace was that way. [Map of Bas-Rhin.]
Note.--Mülhausen, which is village in Bas-Rhin, ought not to be confused with Mulhouse which is a city south of Colmar in Haut-Rhin, as that city's German language name is also "Mülhausen".
Civil Registration. In the context of this document, the French word Acte means "legal document". Napoleon Bonaparte took possession of the Kingdom of Naples in 1808 and imposed on it the Code Napoléon of 1804. It is for this reason that the Civil Register of southern Italy closely resembles the Civil Register of France, as for example this Italian birth record from 1887, with English translation.
