Marriage record of Johann Kiehl and Anna Maria Peter, Mülhausen, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, 11 December 1814

Jean Kiehl was born 13 December 1796 to Henry Kiehl and Catherina (née Conrath) Keihl. He married Anna Maria Peter, born 21 May 1796, daughter of Jean Peter and Madelaine (née Schnepp) Peter. All were resident in Mülhausen. The three men were farmers. Johann and Maria were the parents of Margarett Kiehl (1830-1916) of Mülhausen, in the Arrondissement Communal ("municipal borough") of Saverne, Department of Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. There were five marriages in Mülhausen in 1814.

1. France has only one official language and thus all official documents must be written in French even if the native language of the people is different, as it is in Alsace (where people speak German) and in Corsica (where they speak an old Genoese dialect).

In present French orthography, the document's words présens and consentans are spelled présents and consentants, and their meaning is "present" and "consenting", that is, the parents give their consent for their child to enter into this marriage.

1a. That the parents are present and give their consent to a marriage is sometimes found in the Italian civil registers, as for example --

Sono altresì comparso Luigi di Renzo e Nunzia Iacovelli, genitori dello sposo, i quali danno anch'esse il loro consenso per contrarre il predetto matrimonio.

Al suddetto matrimonio hanno prestato il loro consenso i genitori dello sposo.

"Also present are Luigi di Renzo and Nunzia Iacovelli, the groom's parents, who give their consent (for him) to enter into this marriage." "To the following marriage the parents of the groom have given their consent." (Borough of Gambatesa, Province of Molise, Marriage Banns 1895 #7, and Marriage Act 1895 #9)

2. Anna Maria was known by the name "Maria" rather than "Anna", as is shown by her daughter Margarett's Mülhausen birth record (4 Aug 1830).

3. Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, Delaware County, Pennsylvania has the following information (9 Aug 2019):
• John Kiehl - native of Germany, age 81, occupation - farmer, cause of death - old age
• Mary Kiehl - buried here 09-06-1882, age 87, cause of death - debility.
• Both are buried in Section R, Lot 93 #3

These would be Johann and (Anna) Maria Kiehl. As they died in the 19th Century, both were originally buried in Glenwood Cemetery (Defunct) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 81 years added to 1796 is 1877, at which time (between the Franco-Prussian War and the end of World War One) Alsace was part of Germany.
