A pump for spraying the vines in the vineyard (pompe pour la vigne), at my godfather's farm in Gambatesa's Walnut Plain, or Plain of Walnuts.
The grape vines in the vineyard must be treated to prevent insect and fungus damage. The spray used in this instance is a solution of copper -- and is simply called rame ("copper") by the farmers. Such chemicals are toxic to human beings.
And so the pump is worn on the man's back, and with one hand he holds the spray nozzle and with the other he works the lever that pumps the copper solution through it.
