Gambatesa, Molise

From Il Molise: libro sussidiario per la cultura regionale ("Molise: subsidiary book for regional culture"), Milan: A. Mondadori [ca. 1920s], Chapter XLVIII, pages 223-225.

Note: the word campanili means "bell towers", but the idea is that a paese is limited to the area in which one can still hear its church bells (campanilismo). The word paese means "borough", "township", "municipality", that is, a town and the agricultural land or territory it administers; but the word also means "native land".

Towns of Molise

The motorcar service Lucera-Riccia-Campobasso-Trivento connects the two farthest points of Molise, from the banks of the Fortore River to those of the Trigno, from the mountains of upper Capitanata to those of Abruzzo.

Across the magnificent Bridge of the 13 Arches, 185 meters long and open to traffic since 1859, the first Molisean town that one goes through is Gambatesa, aligned along a hill facing the ranges of the Daunia Mountains, which exports excellent wine, fruit and vegetables.

Towards the middle of July one can admire the characteristic procession of Our Lady of Victory. The statue is displayed in a chapel outside the inhabited center of the town, near the Fezzano Rivulet. Proceeding the heavenly patroness are many carts pulled by oxen, on which rise traglie ("grain stacks") of grain offered by the faithful. The feast is then celebrated on the 15th of August.

Campanili Molisani

Also born there were the great Captain Riccardo da Gambatesa, who in 1318 defeated Marco Visconti and Castruccio Castracane; Prosdocimo Rotondo, martyr of 1799; and Domenico Venditti ardent patriot, decorated for miliary bravery for his implacable and daring action against brigandage.
